The FBI continues to see reports of fraudulent ticket sales for Super Bowl XL, which is to be held on February 5, 2006, in Detroit, Michigan.
These scams involve tickets being advertised at well-known online auction and classified advertisement web sites. Interested buyers are instructed to use a wire transfer payment service to send the money quickly in order to secure the tickets. In some cases, the buyers are instructed to wire the money overseas under the pretense that the seller is out of the United States for work reasons or vacation, and therefore cannot use the tickets. Once the payment is received, the seller ceases contact and the tickets never materialize.
Consumers should be very cautious when attempting to purchase tickets from other than reputable ticket outlets or brokers. Consumers are further advised against sending case payments or using wire transfer services to pay for tickets, particularly to recipients outside the United States.
